Starting on Monday, January 22, 2024, commercial transport fares will increase by an astounding 30%, which will severely hurt Ghanaian commuters financially.
The announcement made by the transportation authorities has sparked discussions and concerns among the populace, which is already navigating the current economic challenges.
The increase, according to a press release from the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, is the consequence of a “substantial rise in the costs of lubricants and spare parts, coupled with an increment in DVLA service charges,” and it is significantly affecting the members’ means of subsistence.
The operators also lamented the high cost of maintenance and repairs.
“The proposed fare increase aims to address the financial challenges faced by the drivers and ensure the sustainability of the public transportation industry in Ghana,” read the press release from the commercial transport operators.
The Transport Operators Association revealed that they have had in-depth discussions with various stakeholders, including relevant state agencies and other transportation associations, in recognition of the detrimental effects of these barriers.
