Joel Ofori Bonsu, better known by his stage name OlivetheBoy, is a Ghanaian music sensation. He has shared a heartwarming dynamic in his relationship with his father, a Presbyterian pastor.
Despite occupying different spheres, spirituality, and music, OlivetheBoy shares that his father not only supports his musical pursuits but genuinely loves his songs.
In an exclusive interview with Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz host Andy Dosty, “Goodsin” revealed that his father is a man of God and his mother is a teacher, coming from a very disciplined and moral family.
Due to their strong religious beliefs, the crooner claimed that his family originally disapproved of him when he began his musical career. There were expectations that he would pursue a career in the pulpit, just like his father.
However, he found his passion in music, which initially caused some friction within his family.
“My parents initially did not support me when I started music. When I dropped my first song, I was supposed to be in school by then. My mother wanted to have me arrested, so she called to ask why I was recording music during class.
You know, there is a misconception that students who choose to major in music after graduation are koborlor,” he clarified.
Olivetheboy said that his father began to enjoy his music as it began to gain airplay, citing “Goodsin,” his breakthrough single, as his favorite.
However, OlivetheBoy’s mother also began to soften as she saw her son’s commitment to and skill in the business. She even attended one of his concerts and enthusiastically joined him on stage.
Currently, OlivetheBoy said his parents are supportive but have given him restrictions on lifestyles to pursue and things that are out of bounds.
