Music industry executive Kwesi Ernest has sparked intense conversation after issuing a blunt warning about the dangers many young artistes face when signing record deals.
According to him, several upcoming musicians in Ghana and beyond have entered contracts so restrictive that they effectively lose control over their own careers — and in extreme cases, as he dramatically put it, “sign away their intestines.”
The comment, though metaphorical, was meant to highlight what he describes as exploitative agreements that strip artistes of ownership, royalties, and long-term financial benefits from their own creative work.
Kwesi Ernest explained that many young talents, driven by fame and financial pressure, rush into contracts without proper legal guidance or understanding of the terms involved. This, he says, leaves them vulnerable to industry players who prioritise profit over artistic development.
He warned that some contracts give labels full control over music rights, branding, earnings, and even future projects, leaving artistes with little to nothing after their songs become successful.
