NPP MP Accuses Former President of Unmet Commitments on Flood Control

A fresh political debate has erupted over Ghana’s recurring flood challenges after former Deputy Minister and Member of Parliament Eugene Nyantekyi Egyapa Mercer accused former President John Dramani Mahama of failing to deliver on earlier flood mitigation promises made during his time in office.

Speaking in a strongly worded critique, Mercer alleged that despite repeated assurances and policy commitments aimed at addressing flooding in vulnerable communities, many of those interventions were either incomplete or never fully implemented.

He argued that Ghana continues to suffer severe flooding incidents in urban and coastal areas because successive administrations have not treated drainage infrastructure and water management systems with the urgency they require.

The comments have reignited political tensions between the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), with both sides trading blame over who is responsible for long-standing infrastructure gaps.

Mercer maintained that flood mitigation is not merely about policy announcements but about consistent implementation, maintenance of drainage systems, and long-term investment in urban planning.

He insisted that many communities still experience devastating floods during heavy rains because promised projects either stalled or failed to achieve their intended impact.

His remarks have sparked renewed political debate, with opposition figures expected to challenge his claims and argue that flood challenges are structural, historical, and compounded across multiple administrations.

Meanwhile, residents in flood-prone areas continue to call for urgent and sustained action, as seasonal rains once again raise concerns about preparedness and disaster response.

Political analysts say the exchange underscores how environmental and infrastructure issues are increasingly becoming central themes in Ghana’s political discourse, especially as parties seek to assign accountability for persistent national challenges.
