The Government of Ghana is considering a proposal that would allow Ghanaian students in the diaspora to undertake their mandatory national service in Ghana, a move aimed at strengthening ties with citizens abroad while tapping into their skills for national development.

The proposed initiative seeks to create a structured pathway for eligible diaspora students to participate in the country’s national service programme, enabling them to contribute to key sectors while reconnecting with their heritage.

Although the proposal is still under consideration, officials say the programme is expected to target Ghanaian students studying abroad who wish to fulfil their national service obligation without being excluded because of their overseas education.

If implemented, participants could be deployed to sectors such as education, healthcare, technology, public administration, research, and other areas where their knowledge and expertise can support national development.

Supporters of the initiative believe it could strengthen engagement between Ghana and its global diaspora, encourage skills transfer, promote cultural exchange, and create valuable networking opportunities for young professionals with Ghanaian roots.

However, questions remain over eligibility criteria, implementation guidelines, deployment procedures, funding, and whether participation will be mandatory or voluntary for diaspora students. Government is expected to provide further details as consultations continue.

If approved, the programme would mark a significant shift in Ghana’s approach to national service, expanding participation beyond graduates educated locally and reinforcing the country’s broader efforts to deepen diaspora involvement in national development.
