Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is set to introduce higher healthcare tariffs from August 2026, following an announcement by the Minister for Health aimed at improving healthcare financing and enhancing service delivery across the country.

According to the Health Minister, the revised tariffs are expected to provide better reimbursement for healthcare providers, helping to address longstanding concerns over delayed payments, rising operational costs, and the sustainability of health services under the NHIS.

The adjustment is also intended to strengthen the Scheme by ensuring that hospitals, clinics, and other accredited health facilities receive adequate financial support to deliver quality healthcare to insured patients.

Health sector stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the tariff review will improve service delivery, reduce financial pressure on providers, and enhance access to essential healthcare services.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the NHIS and ensuring that the Scheme remains responsive to the healthcare needs of Ghanaians through sustainable funding and continuous reforms.

The new tariffs are expected to take effect in August 2026, with further implementation details anticipated from the National Health Insurance Authority in the coming weeks.
