Television stations in Ghana could soon face enforcement action over the alleged illegal broadcast of Nigerian movies, following a warning from the National Film Authority (NFA) that it will clamp down on stations operating without proper authorization.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NFA has assured a top Nigerian filmmaker that measures are being taken to protect creative works and ensure that film producers receive the necessary recognition and benefits from their productions.
The move is expected to target television channels accused of airing Nigerian films without securing the required rights or permissions, a practice industry players say affects the growth of the creative economy and denies filmmakers revenue.
The assurance comes amid growing concerns among filmmakers across Africa about piracy, unauthorized distribution, and the need for stronger enforcement of intellectual property laws.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the planned action, arguing that protecting filmmakers’ rights will encourage more investment, improve standards, and strengthen cooperation between Ghana’s and Nigeria’s entertainment industries.
The NFA says it remains committed to ensuring compliance within Ghana’s film and broadcasting space while creating a fairer environment for content creators.
