“YOU FAILED IN 8 YEARS—WHY EXPECT US TO FIX IT IN 2?” — HARUNA FIRES BACK AT NPP OVER FLOODING CRITICISM

A heated political exchange has erupted over Ghana’s recurring flooding crisis after Works, Housing and Water Resources Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei? Wait no—the remarks were made by Haruna Iddrisu, who hit back at the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), questioning why the party expects the current administration to solve a problem it allegedly failed to address during its eight years in office.

Haruna argued that it is unreasonable for the NPP to demand immediate solutions to a long-standing national challenge after, in his view, leaving office without permanently resolving it.

“WHERE WAS THE SOLUTION AFTER EIGHT YEARS?”

Responding to criticism over recent flooding incidents, Haruna challenged the NPP’s record, insisting that the opposition had ample time in government to implement lasting flood mitigation measures.

He maintained that the current administration inherited deep-rooted infrastructure and urban planning challenges that cannot be eliminated overnight.

GOVERNMENT DEFENDS ITS RESPONSE

Haruna said the government is already taking steps to tackle flooding through drainage improvements, enforcement against illegal structures obstructing waterways, and investments in disaster preparedness.

He stressed that addressing decades-old flooding problems requires sustained planning, funding, and cooperation from both public institutions and citizens.

FLOODING BECOMES POLITICAL BATTLEGROUND

The recent floods have reignited political debate, with both the governing party and the opposition trading blame over the causes of the recurring disaster.

While critics have demanded faster action, government officials insist that meaningful progress will take time given the scale of the challenge.

THE DEBATE CONTINUES

As Ghana searches for lasting solutions to annual flooding, Haruna’s response has added a sharp political edge to the conversation.

His message to the opposition was unmistakable: if eight years in power did not eliminate the problem, expecting a complete solution within two years is unrealistic.
