The Regional Minister has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take urgent steps to strengthen urban management systems in order to address the growing challenges associated with rapid urbanization and ensure sustainable development.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement, the Minister emphasized the need for local authorities to adopt proactive measures that will improve city planning, sanitation, infrastructure development, traffic management, and environmental sustainability.

According to the Minister, Ghana’s urban centers continue to experience significant population growth, placing immense pressure on existing infrastructure and public services. He noted that without effective urban management strategies, cities and towns could face worsening challenges, including congestion, flooding, poor waste disposal, and unregulated development.

“Urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges. It is therefore imperative that assemblies strengthen their management systems to ensure that our communities remain organized, resilient, and capable of supporting economic growth,” the Minister stated.

He urged assemblies to enforce planning regulations more effectively and work closely with traditional authorities, community leaders, and relevant institutions to promote orderly development across their jurisdictions.

He encouraged local authorities to embrace innovative solutions that can help monitor development activities, enhance revenue collection, and improve the efficiency of public services.

Touching on sanitation and environmental management, he stressed the need for assemblies to intensify efforts aimed at maintaining clean communities and preventing practices that contribute to environmental degradation.

The Minister further called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to mobilize the resources needed for sustainable urban development projects.

He noted that effective urban management is critical to achieving national development goals and improving the quality of life for residents, adding that well-planned cities and towns are essential for attracting investment and creating economic opportunities.

Participants at the event echoed the Minister’s concerns and reaffirmed their commitment to implementing measures that will strengthen urban governance and improve living conditions within their respective areas.

The call comes at a time when many urban communities across the country are grappling with challenges related to population growth, infrastructure deficits, sanitation concerns, and climate-related risks, underscoring the need for coordinated and long-term planning efforts.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that stronger urban management systems, backed by effective policy implementation and community participation, will help create more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cities for future generations.
