In a shocking turn of events, celebrated Ghanaian art titan Ibrahim Mahama, recently hailed as one of the most influential figures in global contemporary art, claims he was violently assaulted by police officers in broad daylight in Tamale, leaving the internationally renowned artist injured and shaken.

Eyewitnesses say the brutal encounter unfolded early Saturday morning as Mahama was returning from prayer, but what should have been a quiet moment quickly turned into a violent clash with members of the Ghana Police Service’s Special Operations Team.

According to Mahama, the attack was unprovoked, resulting in dental injuries, a cut lip, and a blood-soaked shirt — graphic images shared online showing the aftermath of the alleged assault.

In his first public statement since the ordeal, Mahama described the police conduct as an abuse of basic human rights, alleging that officers forced their way onto his vehicle, demanded access to his phone, and destroyed digital content, an act he says amounted to a gross violation of his dignity and freedom.

The celebrated artist has announced plans for legal action against the special operations team, vowing that those responsible will be held to account in court.

Sources close to Mahama say he has been forced to suspend a series of high-profile international engagements and cancel prestigious foreign appearances as a result of his injuries, which have affected his speech and sleep — a devastating blow to a figure at the pinnacle of the global art scene.

This comes just months after Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, made history as the first African to top global art influence rankings.

The Inspector-General of Police has ordered an internal probe and directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the alleged assault, while regional commands have also launched a criminal inquiry.

Legal experts and civil society voices are calling for an independent, transparent investigation, warning that public trust in law enforcement is on the line.

The alleged assault has triggered outrage across Ghana’s arts community and beyond, with social media buzzing, public figures urging calm, and demands for accountability echoing nationwide.

As this dramatic story continues to unfold, the world watches whether Ghana’s justice system will bring clarity, accountability, and redress — or whether this unprecedented clash between a cultural giant and state security forces will deepen national debate over rights, power, and the rule of law.
