BRUSSELS – Popular video-sharing app TikTok is under intense pressure from the European Union, after regulators issued a stern warning demanding changes to what they describe as the platform’s “addictive design features.”

EU officials argue that TikTok’s endless scroll, autoplay videos, and algorithm-driven content encourage excessive screen time, especially among young users. Failure to comply, they warn, could result in massive fines running into millions—or even billions—of euros.

The move marks a major escalation in Europe’s crackdown on Big Tech, as authorities push to rein in digital platforms accused of prioritizing engagement over user well-being. TikTok has responded by insisting it already offers safety tools, but regulators say that may no longer be enough.

With the deadline looming, the standoff sets the stage for a high-stakes battle between Silicon Valley-style tech giants and Europe’s strict digital laws, one that could reshape how social media works worldwide.
