Estrada battled for the right to pass away with dignity in Peruvian courts for a long time.
Estrada, 47, was afflicted with polymyositis, an inoperable illness that results in muscle weakness. Despite being unable to type due to respiratory issues, she utilized specialized software to compose a blog post detailing her struggles, as reported by the Associated Press.
Euthanasia is only permitted in a select few nations worldwide, including Canada, Belgium, and Spain, according to the AP. Only two countries in Latin America have legalized it: Ecuador in February of this year and Colombia in 2015.
According to her attorney on Monday, Peruvian psychologist Ana Estrada, who had been bedridden for years owing to an incurable muscle illness, was put to death. She is the first person in Peru to be granted this kind of death.
According to the daily El Comercio, Estrada battled for the right to pass away with dignity in Peruvian courts for many years. Euthanasia and assisted suicide are prohibited in Peru.
But in 2021, the court granted Estrada an exemption, and the Supreme Court upheld this ruling a year later. The verdict states that those who assisted her in taking her own life will not face legal consequences. On Sunday, euthanasia was carried out.
“Ana died on her own terms, in a way that was consistent with her idea of dignity,” said a statement published by her lawyer, Josefina Miro Quesada.
“Ana’s fight for the right to die with dignity made it possible to sensitize thousands of Peruvians to the importance of defending this right. Her fight went beyond the borders of our country,” it was assessed.
