The Minority in Parliament has launched a fierce attack over the latest tariff increases, accusing the government and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) of breaking promises made to Ghanaians under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The opposition group described the adjustment in utility charges as a “betrayal” of commitments to protect ordinary citizens from rising living costs, warning that the decision could worsen the economic struggles facing households and businesses.
According to the Minority, the government’s move contradicts earlier assurances that measures would be introduced to reduce financial pressure on Ghanaians. They argued that instead of delivering relief, the latest tariff hikes would place an additional burden on consumers already battling high prices.
The Minority further questioned the timing and impact of the increases, insisting that the decision risks pushing more families into economic hardship.
The group called on the government and PURC to reconsider the tariff adjustments, stressing that public policies must prioritize the welfare of citizens and not deepen the challenges faced by ordinary people.
The controversy has reignited debate over utility pricing, economic management, and the promises made to voters, with calls growing for greater accountability from authorities.
