A traditional leader has launched a major shea conservation campaign aimed at protecting one of Ghana’s most valuable natural resources across 11 districts in the Upper West Region.

The initiative, led by the Queenmother, seeks to promote sustainable management of shea trees, encourage community participation, and safeguard the future of the shea industry, which provides livelihoods for thousands of households.

The campaign is expected to bring together traditional authorities, farmers, women’s groups, local communities, and environmental stakeholders to address growing threats facing shea trees, including uncontrolled cutting, bushfires, and environmental degradation.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, stakeholders emphasized that protecting shea trees is not only an environmental responsibility but also a crucial step toward supporting rural economies and preserving a key source of income for women involved in shea processing.

The Queenmother’s intervention has been welcomed by community members, who believe traditional leadership can play a critical role in mobilising citizens to protect natural resources.

As climate change and human activities continue to put pressure on Ghana’s natural ecosystems, the conservation drive is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve shea landscapes for future generations.
