A former Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast (UCC) has called on university lecturers to place greater emphasis on mentoring and nurturing students rather than focusing primarily on publishing academic books and research papers.

Speaking on the role of higher education, the former Vice-Chancellor stressed that while research and publications remain important, the core responsibility of lecturers should be to develop the intellectual, professional, and personal growth of their students.

He argued that universities exist not only to produce scholarly works but also to shape future leaders, innovators, and professionals through quality teaching, mentorship, and meaningful engagement.

According to him, lecturers should strive to strike a balance between academic research and student development, ensuring that the pursuit of publications does not come at the expense of effective teaching and guidance.

The education expert further noted that students thrive when lecturers invest time in mentoring, encouraging critical thinking, and providing the support needed to help them succeed both academically and professionally.

His remarks have reignited conversations within academic circles about the balance between research output and teaching excellence, with many acknowledging the growing pressure on lecturers to publish in order to advance their careers.

The call serves as a reminder that the lasting impact of higher education is measured not only by the number of publications produced but also by the quality of graduates and the positive influence educators have on the lives of their students.
