President John Dramani Mahama has announced a nationwide initiative to combat flooding and improve environmental sanitation, revealing plans for the military to undertake the dredging of major waterways alongside the introduction of monthly national clean-up exercises.
The President said the intervention forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address persistent flooding, improve drainage systems, and promote cleaner communities across the country.
Under the initiative, the military will be deployed to dredge choked rivers, drains, and other waterways to restore the free flow of water, reduce the risk of flooding, and protect lives and property during the rainy season.
In addition, President Mahama announced that regular monthly clean-up days will be observed to encourage citizens, local authorities, and institutions to actively participate in keeping communities clean and preventing indiscriminate waste disposal.
He stressed that environmental sanitation is a shared national responsibility and called on Ghanaians to support the campaign by adopting responsible waste management practices and maintaining clean surroundings.
The President noted that government alone cannot solve the country’s sanitation challenges, urging communities, businesses, and civil society organisations to work together in safeguarding the environment.
The announcement has been welcomed by many as a proactive step toward strengthening flood prevention efforts and improving public health through sustained environmental cleanliness and community participation.
