The Cardiac Catheterisation (Cath) Laboratory at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has officially reopened, 16 months after a fire forced the temporary closure of the critical heart care facility.
The reopening marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s premier referral hospital, restoring a vital centre for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The refurbished facility is expected to resume life-saving procedures, including angiograms, angioplasty, and other specialised cardiac interventions.

Health officials and hospital management described the restoration of the Cath Lab as a major boost to the country’s healthcare system, noting that patients who previously faced delays or referrals for specialised cardiac care will once again have access to advanced treatment locally.
The reopening follows extensive rehabilitation works carried out after the fire, with renewed emphasis on improved safety measures, upgraded equipment, and enhanced operational standards to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

Patients, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the restored facility will strengthen Ghana’s capacity to manage heart-related conditions and improve access to quality cardiovascular care.
