President John Dramani Mahama has inspected the ‘Nkokɔ Nketenkete’ poultry processing plant at Bechem in the Ahafo Region, expressing optimism that the initiative will position the town as Ghana’s chicken capital.

The inspection forms part of efforts to promote local poultry production, strengthen the agricultural sector and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported chicken.

The ‘Nkokɔ Nketenkete’ initiative is expected to support the development of the domestic poultry industry by creating opportunities for poultry farmers, processors and other businesses along the production value chain.

During the visit, President Mahama indicated that Bechem could emerge as a major centre for poultry production and processing, potentially creating jobs and boosting economic activity in the area.

The development is also expected to provide a market for locally raised chickens, helping poultry farmers increase production and improve their access to buyers.

Ghana has long relied heavily on imported poultry products to meet domestic demand, presenting challenges for local producers competing with imported chicken.

Investments in poultry processing infrastructure could help address some of these challenges by improving local processing capacity and strengthening links between farmers and the market.

If successfully implemented, the initiative could create employment opportunities for young people, support agribusinesses and contribute to the government’s broader agricultural development agenda.

President Mahama’s remarks signal an ambition to establish Bechem as a key destination for poultry farming and processing in Ghana.

Further details on the plant’s operational capacity, projected job creation and implementation timeline were not included in the information available at the time of writing.
