New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser hopeful Hajia Safia Mohammed has unveiled a women-centred agenda aimed at empowering party women and rebuilding the party’s grassroots structures.
Hajia Safia, who currently serves as Deputy National Women’s Organiser, made the commitment during her campaign tour of the Bono Region as she continues her nationwide engagement ahead of the party’s national executive elections.
Her message was clear: women at the grassroots must have a stronger voice in the affairs of the party and should not be seen only as a force to be mobilised during election periods.
According to her, a stronger Women’s Wing requires greater inclusion, opportunities and unity across the various levels of the party, from polling stations and constituencies to the regional and national structures.
‘Women must be empowered’
Hajia Safia said her vision is to build a Women’s Wing that is better positioned to respond to the needs of its members while playing a more meaningful role in the rebuilding of the NPP.
She has also placed grassroots mobilisation at the heart of her campaign, arguing that strengthening the party from the base will be crucial to its future political organisation.
Her campaign comes after the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general election, following which she has advocated for renewed grassroots engagement and stronger party structures. In April, she said she had toured all 16 regions after the election as part of efforts to re-energise the party’s base.
Focus on women’s representation
Hajia Safia has previously outlined plans to increase the number of women representing the NPP in Parliament, setting a target of at least 30 percent female representation among the party’s parliamentary contingent if elected.
She has argued that achieving such a target would require deliberately identifying, supporting and campaigning for women capable of winning parliamentary seats.
She has also identified several constituencies lost by the NPP in the 2024 election as areas the party should seek to reclaim, placing women’s mobilisation at the centre of that effort.
Grassroots support
Her campaign has already placed considerable emphasis on supporting women organisers at the constituency level.
In June, Hajia Safia reportedly paid the nomination fees for incumbent women organisers seeking re-election across all 276 constituencies, a move presented as an effort to reduce financial barriers for grassroots women leaders.
She has also spoken about the need for orientation and capacity-building programmes for women organisers to strengthen their effectiveness at the constituency level.
As the NPP prepares for its national executive elections, Hajia Safia is presenting empowerment, inclusion, grassroots mobilisation and unity as key pillars of her campaign.
The National Annual Delegates Conference is scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Kumasi, where the contest for National Women’s Organiser will be decided. Hajia Safia is listed alongside Mavis Hawa Koomson in the race for the position.
For Hajia Safia, the campaign is ultimately about taking the Women’s Wing back to the grassroots, giving women a greater role in party affairs and building a stronger organisational base ahead of the NPP’s next electoral battles.
