Ghana is facing one of its worst weather disasters in recent history after June 2026 recorded the highest monthly rainfall ever documented, leaving communities devastated and forcing government to activate emergency measures.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, told Parliament that the country recorded a staggering 593.2 millimetres of rainfall in June, surpassing previous records and triggering widespread flooding across parts of the country.

The historic downpour has left a trail of destruction, with thousands of residents displaced, lives lost, and communities struggling to recover from the impact of overflowing drains and rising floodwaters. According to the Interior Minister, the floods affected multiple areas in the Greater Accra Region, leaving 7,761 households displaced and 38,802 people impacted, while deaths and missing persons were also reported.

In response to the growing crisis, Muntaka informed Parliament that President John Dramani Mahama has authorised the release of funds from the contingency reserve to support flood relief and mitigation efforts.

The announcement has placed government’s emergency response under the spotlight, as authorities move to provide relief to affected families, restore damaged areas, and strengthen flood control measures.

The Minister also disclosed that security agencies, including military engineers, have been deployed to assist with emergency interventions as the country battles the aftermath of the unprecedented rains.

With the rainy season still ongoing, the disaster has renewed urgent calls for improved drainage systems, stricter enforcement against construction on waterways, and long-term solutions to Ghana’s recurring flooding crisis.
