A new report has uncovered alarming challenges in Ghana’s education sector, revealing that one in every five districts is grappling with severe teacher shortages, while nearly half of primary school pupils are struggling to achieve basic proficiency in Mathematics.

The findings paint a concerning picture of learning outcomes across the country, with inadequate teacher numbers identified as a major obstacle to delivering quality education and improving academic performance.

According to the report, the shortage of qualified teachers is particularly pronounced in underserved and rural districts, where schools continue to face difficulties recruiting and retaining educators. The situation has placed additional pressure on existing teachers and affected the quality of classroom instruction.

The report also highlights poor Mathematics performance among pupils, raising concerns about foundational learning and the long-term impact on students’ academic progress and future opportunities.

Education stakeholders have called for urgent interventions, including the equitable deployment of teachers, improved incentives for educators in deprived communities, enhanced teacher training, and increased investment in learning resources to address the growing challenges.

The findings have renewed calls for comprehensive reforms to strengthen Ghana’s education system, with experts warning that closing the teacher gap and improving learning outcomes will be critical to achieving quality education and equipping young people with the skills needed for national development.
