A heartbreaking controversy has erupted in the Savannah Region after three teenage girls reportedly missed the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) because they were allegedly forced into marriage.

The victims, believed to be between the ages of 13 and 16, were expected to sit for the life-changing examination alongside their colleagues. Instead, their classrooms were replaced with marital homes — a shocking development that has triggered anger and concern across the country.

The disturbing incident reportedly occurred in Yapei in the Central Gonja District, where local authorities say the girls’ education was abruptly cut short after they were allegedly pushed into early marriages against their will. District Chief Executive Mahama Fuseini described the situation as a painful setback to the fight for girl-child education in the area.

What should have been a proud academic milestone for the girls has now turned into a national conversation about child marriage, poverty, and the future of vulnerable young girls in rural communities.

Residents and education advocates have expressed outrage, warning that the incident exposes a deeper social crisis still affecting many communities despite years of campaigns against child marriage.

“This is devastating,” some community members reportedly lamented, as calls grow louder for authorities to intervene and rescue affected girls from similar situations.

The incident has once again reignited demands for stricter enforcement of laws protecting children, with many questioning how young schoolgirls could disappear from classrooms into marriages without immediate intervention.

As thousands of candidates continue writing this year’s BECE across Ghana, the painful absence of these three girls serves as a chilling reminder that for some children, the biggest battle is not the examination hall — but the fight to stay in school.
