A major enforcement operation has shaken parts of Accra after authorities impounded nearly 100 unlicensed courier and delivery riders in a coordinated clampdown aimed at restoring order on the city’s roads.

The surprise exercise, carried out across key commercial and high-traffic areas, targeted riders operating without the required documentation, licenses, or regulatory approvals. Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to tighten compliance within Ghana’s rapidly growing delivery and logistics sector.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as riders were stopped, checked, and in many cases had their motorbikes seized on the spot. Some riders reportedly pleaded for leniency, insisting they were only trying to earn a living in a tough economy.

Authorities, however, maintain that the enforcement is necessary to curb road safety risks, unregulated operations, and potential security concerns linked to unregistered courier services.

According to preliminary figures, close to 100 bikes were impounded during the operation, with riders expected to face further screening and possible sanctions depending on their documentation status.

The clampdown has already sparked mixed reactions across the city. While some residents have praised the move as overdue and necessary for public safety, others argue it could disrupt livelihoods and worsen unemployment pressures among young people.

Officials have hinted that similar operations may continue in the coming weeks as part of a sustained effort to enforce transport and business regulations within the capital.

As Accra’s delivery economy continues to expand rapidly, the tension between regulation and survival jobs is once again in sharp focus.
