Policy analyst Franklin Cudjoe has dismissed claims that delays in the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project were responsible for the devastating floods that recently hit Accra.

Responding to the ongoing debate surrounding the disaster, Cudjoe argued that attributing the flooding solely to alleged delays in the GARID Project oversimplifies a much broader and more complex challenge.

He maintained that Accra’s recurring flood crisis stems from multiple factors, including poor urban planning, inadequate drainage infrastructure, indiscriminate construction, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations.

According to him, while infrastructure projects such as GARID are important in strengthening flood resilience, they should not be portrayed as the single solution to a problem that has developed over many years.

His remarks come amid heightened public scrutiny over the causes of the recent flooding, which displaced thousands of residents, claimed lives, and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.

The comments have fueled fresh discussions on the need for comprehensive flood management strategies, with many calling for stronger coordination between government agencies, local authorities, and communities to tackle Accra’s long-standing flooding challenges.
