Aliko Dangote has explained why he wants ordinary Nigerians to have a stake in the Dangote Refinery, insisting that the proposed share offering is about more than simply raising money.

Business mogul Aliko Dangote has urged ordinary Nigerians to consider buying shares in the Dangote Refinery when the company’s planned Initial Public Offering (IPO) becomes available.

Speaking on the rationale behind the proposed listing, Dangote explained that the move should not be viewed merely as an attempt by the company to raise additional capital.

“It’s not that we want to raise money,” Dangote said, while explaining the broader objective behind making shares in the refinery accessible to the public.

According to him, allowing Nigerians to own a stake in the refinery would give ordinary citizens an opportunity to participate directly in one of the country’s most significant industrial investments.

The Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki area of Lagos, has emerged as a major player in Nigeria’s petroleum industry, with the facility designed to process crude oil into refined petroleum products.

Dangote’s comments come amid growing interest in the refinery and its potential impact on Nigeria’s energy sector. The proposed IPO could potentially broaden ownership of the massive facility beyond its principal investors and give members of the public an opportunity to participate in its future.

For ordinary Nigerians, the prospect of buying shares would represent a shift from simply consuming products from the refinery to potentially becoming shareholders in the business.

Dangote’s appeal therefore centres on ownership, rather than fundraising alone.

“We want Nigerians to own part of it,” the billionaire’s message effectively suggests, framing the planned share sale as an opportunity for citizens to participate in the economic value created by the refinery.

If implemented, the offering could become one of the most closely watched corporate share offerings in Nigeria, given the size of the refinery and Dangote Group’s prominence in the country’s economy.
