President John Dramani Mahama has officially commissioned a new cardiac catheterisation (Cath) laboratory at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen specialised healthcare and improve access to life-saving heart treatment.

The state-of-the-art Cath Lab is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to diagnose and treat complex cardiovascular conditions, reducing waiting times and expanding access to advanced cardiac procedures for patients across the country.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama described the facility as a vital investment in Ghana’s healthcare system, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving medical infrastructure and ensuring quality healthcare for all citizens.

Health officials noted that the modern laboratory is equipped with advanced technology to support minimally invasive procedures, including coronary angiography, angioplasty, and other critical heart interventions.

The new facility is also expected to reduce the need for patients to seek expensive cardiac treatment abroad while strengthening the country’s ability to manage the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases.

Medical professionals at Korle Bu welcomed the commissioning, describing the Cath Lab as a significant boost to specialist healthcare services and a step toward positioning the hospital as a leading centre for cardiac care in the region.

The commissioning underscores ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana’s health sector through investments in cutting-edge medical equipment, specialised facilities, and improved patient care.
