Accra — A joint study by the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has raised fresh concerns after identifying high levels of drug use among young people in the Madina and Oyarifa communities.

The research highlights what experts describe as a growing public health and social challenge, with substance abuse increasingly affecting the well-being, education, and future prospects of young people in the two fast-growing communities.

According to the study, the findings point to the need for urgent intervention through strengthened prevention programmes, public education, community engagement, and improved access to treatment and rehabilitation services.

Researchers warned that rising drug use among the youth could have far-reaching consequences, including increased school dropouts, unemployment, mental health challenges, crime, and other social problems if left unaddressed.

The study calls for closer collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, parents, community leaders, and civil society organizations to tackle the root causes of substance abuse and provide support for affected young people.

Stakeholders also stressed the importance of equipping the youth with education, skills, and opportunities that reduce their vulnerability to drug abuse while promoting healthier lifestyles.

The findings have renewed calls for decisive action to protect Ghana’s young population, with experts urging policymakers to prioritize evidence-based strategies to curb the growing threat of substance abuse in vulnerable communities.
