A looming flood risk has forced the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to temporarily shut down operations at the Mallam and Achimota substations in a precautionary move to protect critical power infrastructure.
The emergency decision was taken after rising flood concerns threatened the safety of the facilities, with authorities prioritising the protection of equipment, workers, and the stability of the national electricity supply system.
Officials explained that the temporary shutdown was necessary to reduce the risk of severe damage that could result from water entering the substations, potentially causing major disruptions to power delivery.
The move has raised concerns among residents and businesses in affected areas, with many watching closely for updates on restoration efforts and the return of normal operations.
GRIDCo and ECG are expected to continue monitoring the situation while working with relevant agencies to manage the flood threat and ensure a safe resumption of services.
The incident highlights growing concerns over the impact of flooding on essential infrastructure, as authorities continue to call for improved drainage systems and stronger measures to protect critical national assets.
