Tensions flared at the Ministry of Education, Ghana on Monday as a group of uniform suppliers staged a picket, protesting what they describe as two years of unpaid arrears owed by the government.
The aggrieved suppliers, many of whom provide school uniforms under government-backed arrangements, gathered at the ministry’s premises carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding immediate payment of outstanding debts.
The protestors say the prolonged delay has crippled their businesses, forcing some into financial distress, inability to restock materials, and mounting pressure from banks and creditors. According to them, repeated attempts to resolve the issue through official channels have yielded little progress, prompting the public demonstration.
Security was visibly tightened around the ministry as the group maintained its stance, insisting they would not leave until they receive firm assurances on payment timelines.
Some of the demonstrators expressed frustration, arguing that while the government continues to roll out education initiatives, suppliers who support those programmes are being neglected and left in financial hardship.
The situation has reignited concerns about government arrears management and the impact of delayed payments on small and medium-scale businesses contracted to provide essential services in the education sector.
Officials from the ministry are yet to issue a detailed public response to the protest, but sources indicate that efforts may be underway to engage the aggrieved suppliers and address their concerns.
As the standoff continues, attention is now on whether authorities will move quickly to resolve the dispute and prevent further disruptions to supplier-government relations.
