The boss of the Wireless Festival has defended the decision to keep Kanye West as the headline act, despite widespread backlash over the rapper’s past antisemitic remarks.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, called West’s comments “abhorrent” but emphasized that the festival is a music event, not a political platform, and that West still has the legal right to perform. He urged the public to consider forgiveness and a second chance, a stance that has fueled further debate.

The decision has sparked major consequences: several sponsors, including Pepsi, Diageo, PayPal, and Rockstar Energy, have withdrawn support in protest, while politicians and Jewish community groups have criticized the booking, calling it deeply concerning.

The festival, scheduled for July in London’s Finsbury Park, is expected to go ahead as planned. The controversy highlights the clash between artistic freedom, public accountability, and corporate responsibility in the entertainment industry.
