Industry expert says travel and culture are key to jobs, growth, and foreign exchange

Tourism has emerged as one of Ghana’s most powerful economic drivers, according to tourism and hospitality expert Geoffrey Tamakloe, who says the sector holds the key to jobs, investment, and sustainable national growth.

“Tourism is not just leisure—it is serious business and a major contributor to Ghana’s economy,” Tamakloe stated, urging policymakers to give the sector greater priority.

WHY TOURISM MATTERS

Tamakloe highlighted that tourism:

  • Creates thousands of direct and indirect jobs
  • Generates foreign exchange earnings
  • Promotes Ghana’s culture, heritage, and global image
  • Supports allied sectors like transport, hospitality, arts, and retail

From festivals and heritage sites to eco-tourism and nightlife, Ghana’s tourism ecosystem, he noted, has the potential to drive inclusive economic growth if properly supported.

CALL FOR STRONGER INVESTMENT

The tourism advocate called on government and private stakeholders to:

×
  • Invest in infrastructure and destination development
  • Improve marketing and global promotion
  • Strengthen policy support and incentives for operators

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As Ghana seeks to diversify its economy, Tamakloe insists tourism must be treated as a core economic pillar, not a side attraction.

“If we get tourism right, we unlock jobs, revenue, and long-term growth,” he emphasized.
