In a surprising turn of events, on September 25, 2023, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, announced his resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his bid as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 general elections. Kyerematen, who had been with the NPP since 1992, cited a stark transformation within the party that no longer resembled the one he had nurtured.
In his passionate address, Kyerematen spoke of the NPP’ s transformation, stating that it had been overtaken by select party leaders, government appointees, and behind- the- scenes power brokers. This departure from the party he once knew led him to make a bold declaration: he intended to run for the presidency as an independent candidate. To symbolize his vision for change, he unveiled the ” Movement for Change, ” represented by the Monarch Butterfly— a symbol of transformation, hope, and positivity.

This significant announcement triggered a diverse range of reactions from Ghana’ s celebrity community. Some celebrated Kyerematen’ s decision, believing it to be a courageous step toward his political ambitions. They perceived his exit from the NPP as a strategic move to fulfill the wishes of Ghanaians who wanted him to lead the nation.
However, not all voices sang his praises. Controversial media personality Afia Schwarzenegger, known for her fiery rhetoric, criticized Kyerematen. She questioned his call for youth support, branding him a ” retired politician” and asserting that he no longer deserved the backing of the younger generation. Afia minced no words, accusing Kyerematen of making a ” childish” appeal to the youth.
