In 2008, SZA was dating Drake; she is now revisiting their once-secret relationship.
The singer spoke with Big Tigger for “Audacy Check In” while promoting her new album SOS. During the interview, she was asked about their relationship, which Drake first revealed on 21 Savage’s 2020 hit “Mr. Right Now.”
On the Savage Mode II song, he raps, “Said she wanna f**k to some SZA–wait, ’cause I used to date SZA back in ’08.”
When they aired a “PSA” about Drake’s exes joining together to form a support group, Tigger inquired as to whether it was “awkward” for her to be on the set of “SNL.”
I was like, “In a strange way, did they know?” Given their history, SZA was surprised that they didn’t ask her to participate, she said. When she heard them announce the Drake skit, she was backstage. I thought, “This is insane” as soon as I saw it.
She then compared Drake to Mean Girls’ Regina George, played by Rachel McAdams. She stated, “I think Drake has a Regina George quality to him.” Like a cool kid, he is. It’s entertaining to be the popular kid at school, but sometimes you lose money in the midst of that entertainment.”
SZA admits that after watching the “SNL” skit about her ex, she was both nervous and “definitely laughed real hard.” I wondered, “Will they call me on stage?”
SZA claims that she and Drake remain friendly even after 14 years of dating. We’ve always been cool. We’re cool. It has never been strange. SZA, who was informed by Drake prior to the release of “Mr. Right Now,” stated, “It’s never come completely out of the blue.”
“Whenever he’s consistently referenced me, it’s forever been positive. She continued, “He has never said anything negative about me.” I am thankful for that and regard him highly; however, I find it odd that, after all these years, I am now an artist whereas I was not then, and that he is King Drake.
On songs like “Kill Bill” and “Smoking on My Ex Pack” from her acclaimed new album SOS, on which Travis Scott, Don Toliver, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard appear, SZA talks about her previous relationships.
