A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Masawudu Osman, has revealed why Chairman Wontumi is still detained at EOCO Headquarters.
He described the arrest and detention of Chairman Wontumi as a calculated plan by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Mahama to divert public attention.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s weekend political show on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Alhaji Masawudu, who is the NPP’s Third Vice Chairman, said the recent actions by EOCO against Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) were politically motivated.
According to him, the NDC is using the case to distract Ghanaians from recent controversies involving Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President of Ghana.
“It is just a diversionary tactic from Mahama and the NDC. They want to shift attention from the Jane Naana chartered flight and the fake doctor saga,” Alhaji Masawudu stated during the interview.
He added that a few days ago, Vice President Jane Naana returned from a sick leave in the United Kingdom using a private jet, which raised serious questions about government spending and transparency.
“There are issues about the fake doctor who was allegedly attending to her and the cost of flying her back with a chartered aircraft. But instead of addressing these, they are now using Chairman Wontumi’s case to divert public focus,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, was recently arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over allegations of illegal mining and financial crimes. His arrest has generated mixed reactions, especially among party supporters, some of whom protested at the EOCO office demanding his release.
Meanwhile, the government and EOCO have yet to release a full statement explaining the details of the case.
