Two Ghanaian peacekeepers have been critically wounded after a missile attack slammed into their United Nations base in southern Lebanon, leaving the camp in chaos and sending shockwaves through Ghana’s military and diplomatic circles.

The Ghanaian battalion, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), came under fire between 5:45 and 5:52 p.m. local time amid escalating clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants. The blasts obliterated key facilities, including the Officers’ Mess, leaving soldiers scrambling for shelter.

The injured soldiers were rushed to a medical bunker and are now reported to be stable but in critical condition, while another peacekeeper suffered severe trauma from the attack. Fellow troops took cover in underground bunkers, narrowly avoiding further casualties.

The Government of Ghana has lodged a formal protest with the United Nations, condemning the attack and demanding immediate measures to protect peacekeepers. Officials warn that targeting UN personnel risks undermining global peacekeeping efforts and could escalate regional tensions.

The strike comes amid heightened conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border, raising fears of a wider confrontation and highlighting the dangers faced by Ghanaian troops serving in international conflict zones.
