Veteran Ghanaian journalist and political commentator, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has praised President John Dramani Mahama for defending South Africa and its President, Cyril Ramaphosa, against recent attacks by former United States President Donald Trump.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, May 30, 2025, Kwesi Pratt expressed pride in Mahama’s bold response to Trump’s comments. According to Pratt, Mahama’s show of solidarity with another African leader proves his dedication to protecting the image of Africa.
President Mahama had responded to claims made by Donald Trump, who alleged that white farmers in South Africa were being threatened due to racist policies. Trump also accused President Ramaphosa of not protecting the rights of white South Africans.
But Mahama disagreed strongly. He described Trump’s claims as lies and said the attacks on President Ramaphosa should be seen as an attack on all of Africa and its leadership. Mahama believes Trump’s comments are not only false but also dangerous, especially considering the role the United States once played in supporting apartheid in South Africa.
Kwesi Pratt added that it is surprising for someone from a country that supported apartheid to now accuse the new democratic South Africa of racism. He said such comments are hypocritical and unfair to South Africans who fought hard to build a multi-racial nation.
While Pratt praised Mahama’s strong defense of South Africa, he also shared some concerns about President Ramaphosa. He suggested that Ramaphosa’s constant efforts to please Western powers may be part of the reason why some foreign leaders, like Trump, feel free to disrespect African leaders.
The journalist concluded by saying Mahama’s boldness and support for African unity should inspire other leaders on the continent to speak up and defend one another against unfair treatment from outside powers.
