Actor, businessman, and politician John Dumelo is preparing for his re-run for a seat in the legislature, and he plans to focus on the problem of rent.
Even though Ghana’s Rent Control Department has advised landlords to demand up to six months’ rent upfront, tenants have been required to pay one or two years’ rent in advance to secure a place to live.
Renting has become difficult in Ghana since all landlords want to collect the rent two or three years in advance. Many Ghanaians are finding this to be a major source of headaches, particularly young people who are just starting in life.
On January 1, 2024, John Dumelo, a legislator who appears to be sympathetic to the plight of these young Ghanaians, promised on Twitter that he would use his position to make sure landlords collect the maximum six months’ rent allowed by law. The following was what he tweeted:
