Afia Pokua, better known by her stage name Vim Lady, is a well-known media personality from Ghana who has spoken out about being sexually harassed while riding a bus.

Vim Lady described the incident in a video posted on her social media platform. She said that while returning from an assignment in Tema to Accra by bus, she felt hands repeatedly brushing against her thighs.

“This was a long time ago, I used to work for a newspaper company, and on that day, when I was coming back from covering a story, I took a bus back to the office to file my story.

“On the journey, I noticed someone repeatedly touching my thighs. Since we were tightly packed and it was dark, I couldn’t do anything about it,” she recalled.

She later discovered that the person next to her, the driver’s mate, had ejaculated all over her skirt. Out of pure anger, she said, she slapped him, and then the other passengers started beating him up.

However, she refused to report the matter to the police, fearing stigma and victim-blaming.

“It was when someone was alighting, that I adjusted myself and noticed that the person next to me, the driver’s mate, had ejaculated all over my skirt.

“When the other passengers in the car realized what he had done, they beat him up and told me to report the matter to the police station, but I refused,” the woman said. “I was so angry that my first instinct was to slap him.”

She said she was traumatized by the incident and learned that many women have faced similar experiences of sexual harassment and assault on public transportation.

“I was so traumatized by the incident, it was the first time that something like that had happened to me. I later discovered that many men do that; they board public transportation, sit close to women, and make attempts to mole or pat them,” the woman remarked.

In addition to urging young women to be watchful of others around them and their surroundings, she also called for increased government and societal action to put an end to sexual assault.

Social media users responded differently to her testimony; many expressed support, sympathy, and even rage.
