How I Got My Stage Name – Actor Segun Arinze

Nigerian actor Segun Arinze recently shared the story behind his iconic stage name and how he ventured into the voice-over industry, in a candid conversation on the ‘TalktoB’ podcast with Biola Bayo.

Originally named Segun Aina, the renowned film star explained that he adopted the name ‘Segun Arinze’ in 1991 during his pursuit of a music career.

Recounting the moment, Arinze said, “I was also singing. In 1991, I was told someone wanted to sign me… He signed. And then he said, ‘Okay, we are going to start recording.’”

Arinze’s journey into the entertainment industry began during his time studying Dramatic Arts at Ife.

Despite initial disapproval from his father, who wished for him to become a lawyer, Arinze pursued his passion for acting and music.

He recalled an incident at the National Theatre where his stage name was changed without his prior knowledge, leading to the emergence of ‘Segun Arinze’ on the music scene.

Additionally, Arinze shared insights into his early days as a voice-over artist, revealing that he was introduced to the field by renowned radio broadcaster Soni Irabor.

Reflecting on his first voice-over gig in 1987, he said, “Soni Irabor walks in someday and he was looking for a voice-over artiste… He heard me speak and said, ‘You can do the voice.’ Really? I cannot, he said, ‘Yes, you can, and I will see what you do.’”

Arinze’s inaugural voice-over experience earned him N1,000, a significant amount at the time.

He expressed his excitement, noting that “N1000 for just doing (voice-over)” felt like a major achievement, highlighting the growing opportunities in the entertainment industry during that period.

Through his journey from Segun Aina to Segun Arinze and his successful ventures in both music and voice acting, Arinze continues to inspire aspiring artists and remains a prominent figure in Nigerian entertainment.
