The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced changes to the Senior High School (SHS) selection process for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. This year, students will choose their preferred schools after the BECE results are released, unlike the previous system where selections were made before the exams. The new approach is intended to help students make more informed choices based on their actual performance and reduce placement mismatches.

According to officials, once the BECE results are officially released, candidates will have a one-week window to select their preferred schools through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). This period begins immediately after the results are published.

The GES says the shift is designed to ensure that school selections align closely with students’ academic achievements, improving fairness and efficiency in the placement process. Authorities believe this will significantly reduce issues that previously arose when students chose schools without knowing their grades.

In summary:

  • Candidates will now choose schools after results are released, not before.
  • They will have one week to make their selections via the CSSPS.

This change is part of broader reforms aimed at improving the SHS placement system and ensuring a smoother transition from junior high to senior high school.
