The Government of Ghana has initiated plans to procure and distribute 13 tonnes of improved tomato seed varieties to farmers across the country. The improved seeds are expected to offer better yields and longer shelf life than traditional seeds, part of efforts to boost local tomato production and help close the gap between domestic supply and demand.
Officials say the intervention aims to increase productivity, reduce heavy reliance on imported tomatoes, and support farmers with quality seed options that perform well under local growing conditions. This distribution forms part of broader agricultural strategies designed to improve yields and strengthen the country’s food security.
Analysts note that increasing access to improved seed varieties could significantly enhance farmers’ efficiency and overall output, contributing to stronger performance in the tomato value chain.
