What began as a moment of joy has quickly turned into a heavy responsibility for a Nigerian family after a mother of five unexpectedly gave birth to quadruplets in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The woman, identified as Mufiat Olateju, delivered the four babies at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, bringing the number of children in the family to nine.
According to the mother, the pregnancy came as a surprise and the family was not prepared for the arrival of four babies at once. She explained that earlier medical scans did not clearly show that she was carrying quadruplets, leaving the family shocked when the babies were delivered.
The babies were reportedly born at 32 weeks and are currently receiving special medical care due to their premature birth.
Speaking after the delivery, the mother said the situation has become overwhelming for the family as they struggle to cope with the sudden increase in responsibility.
She appealed to the government and members of the public for assistance, saying she does not have the financial capacity to care for the babies and her other children.
Her husband also admitted that the reality of raising nine children has been difficult for him to process. He called on kind-hearted individuals, organizations, and government agencies to come to their aid.
Medical officials confirmed that the mother is in stable condition, while the newborns remain under close observation in the hospital’s neonatal unit.
The family is now hoping for support from the public to help them handle the medical bills and provide basic needs for the newborns and their siblings.
