Former President Akufo-Addo Honors the Memory of the Late Mion Lana During the Funeral in Dagbon

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid his last respects to the late Mion Lana, Abdullai III, during his funeral held at Sambu (Mion) in the Northern Region.

The funeral, which took place on Thursday and Friday, 29th and 30th May 2025, was attended by many dignitaries, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, 31st May, 2025, the former President said he was honoured to join the Chiefs and people of Dagbon in mourning the late traditional leader. He described the event as a touching moment for him and many others who knew Mion Lana personally.

Akufo-Addo shared that the relationship between his family and the family of the late Mion Lana goes back many generations. He said the late chief’s grandfather, Ya Na Mahamadu Abdullai I, was a close friend of his father. He also had a strong friendship with Mion Lana’s father, Ya Na Mahamadu Abdullai II. As Bolin Lana, Mion Lana was someone Akufo-Addo always visited whenever he went to Yendi.

The former President praised the late Mion Lana and his brother, Yoo Naa Yakubu Andani, for the key role they played in bringing peace to Dagbon after many years of conflict. He said their understanding and acceptance of a special approach to resolving the crisis helped bring unity to the area. He expressed his appreciation for their support, especially in allowing Ya Na Mahama Abukari II to ascend the throne, which helped settle long-standing disputes.

Akufo-Addo extended his heartfelt condolences to the Ya Na, the regent of Mion, and all the people of Dagbon. He prayed for the soul of the late Mion Lana to rest in peace and hoped they would meet again in the afterlife.
