LA (Associated Press) – The allegations of grand theft against a former business manager of Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee were rejected by a Los Angeles judge on Tuesday and a mistrial was proclaimed.
When a jury was evenly divided 11-1 in favor of acquittal after two days of deliberations and a two and a half week trial, Superior Court Judge George Lomeli dismissed the charges against Keya Morgan, who was charged with stealing from Lee.
According to Variety, Lomeli said that he was intervening “in the interests of justice” to clear Morgan of three felonies related to grand larceny from an elderly person.
Alex Kessel, Morgan’s attorney, wrote to The Washington Post in an email, “My client and I have spent the last four years demonstrating his innocence, and today we succeeded.”

According to Morgan’s lawyer Alex Kessel, “my client and I have spent four years demonstrating his innocence and now we succeeded.”
Authorities said that Morgan, 41, defrauded Lee of more than $220,000 from three autograph signings of artifacts roughly six months prior to Lee’s passing in 2018.
The following year, Morgan was taken into custody. Long before the trial, Morgan’s first accusations of elder abuse and false imprisonment were abandoned.
During the trial, the prosecution claimed that Morgan had taken advantage of Lee when he was mentally deteriorating and acted without his permission on his behalf.
Kessel argued that J.C. Lee, a witness during the trial, was the real recipient of the missing funds, not Lee’s daughter and heir.
The hearings were considerably overshadowed by the concurrent trials of infamous film tycoon Harvey Weinstein and actor Danny Masterson, which were taking place in the same hallway of a courthouse in downtown Los Angeles as Morgan’s.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office did not promptly respond to an email sent to them after hours requesting comment.
