Don’t force ‘trumu trumu’ on us — Bawumia to US

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed his firm stance against LGBTQ activities in Ghana, vowing zero tolerance if elected president.

Emphasizing that such activities contradict the nation’s core values, he pledged to uphold religious and cultural norms that reject LGBTQ practices.

Addressing the clergy in Cape Coast on June 3, 2024, during his tour of the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia stated, “We will not agree. The Bible doesn’t tolerate it, the Quran doesn’t tolerate it, and our African values do not tolerate it. So it is a no, no, and no.”

Drawing parallels to the prohibition of polygamy in certain jurisdictions, he asserted that same-sex marriages would not be legalized under his administration. Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to protecting Ghana’s family and cultural values from influences he deems negative.

In August 2021, a bill was introduced in parliament to further restrict the rights of LGBT+ people, including criminalizing the defense of LGBT+ rights, mandating the reporting of “suspects,” promoting conversion therapy, and imposing harsher prison sentences for homosexuality.

The “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021” has been passed by parliament and awaits President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s signature to become law.

The introduction of this bill sparked significant public debate, reflecting the deeply divided opinions on LGBTQ rights within the country.
