In a statement that has sent shockwaves across Ghana, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has made it crystal clear: you cannot register your “side-chick” as a pension beneficiary. The General Manager in charge of Benefits emphasized that only legally recognized dependents, such as spouses and blood relatives, are eligible to receive pension payouts.

Addressing contributors at a forum in Sunyani, the SSNIT GM delivered what many are calling a pension reality check, warning against casual claims by boyfriends, girlfriends, or informal partners. “Only legal dependents qualify,” the Trust stressed, dispelling circulating rumors suggesting otherwise.

This stern warning is part of SSNIT’s ongoing effort to tighten beneficiary records and improve pension literacy across the country. The Trust insists that contributors must follow the rules strictly, making it clear that informal relationships will not entitle anyone to pension benefits.

Whether this announcement will stop those hoping for unexpected pension windfalls remains uncertain, but SSNIT’s position is firm: only legally recognized dependents will receive pensions.
