The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo constituency, Honorable Vincent Assafuah has said that another top member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, has been arrested in a dramatic fashion at his home in Accra. He made this revelation on his Facebook page.
The arrest took place early Friday morning, 23rd May 2025. According to eyewitnesses, about eight heavily armed men believed to be officers from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) stormed his residence while he was taking a bath. Six of the men were wearing face masks and holding AK-47 rifles. They reportedly broke down the doors of the house and told Kumi they only wanted to talk to him. However, they ended up taking him away without giving any clear reason.
Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, confirmed the incident during an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show. She said the family is still in shock and is currently trying to locate him at the NIB office.
This arrest comes just days after Alfred Kumi submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama. In the petition, Kumi called for the immediate dissolution of the committee investigating Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He had accused two members of the five-member committee of meeting secretly with a lawyer representing one of the petitioners, which he said compromised the committee’s fairness.
The arrest has caused anger among NPP supporters. The party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, took to social media urging all NPP members to rush to Kumi’s house, claiming more than 20 CID and national security officers had surrounded the place.
So far, no official reason has been given for Kumi’s arrest, and many Ghanaians are now worried about what this means for democracy, freedom of speech, and fair governance in the country.
