Ghanaian rapper Derrick Safo Kantanka better known as Amerado, has for the first time discussed his experiences after he travelled to the UK.
The rapper went to the UK for tourism and odd jobs and to start life afresh, and gladly returned to Ghana with a few thousand pounds, but owing to some poor choices he made, he soon had nothing.
Amerado stated in a Delay Show interview that he was fortunate to be one of the few musicians scheduled for the Ghana Music Awards, UK, as a result of which he was able to support himself for a few months.
He claimed that the money he received for his performance at the Ghana Music Awards in the UK was used to decorate his one bedroom, cover his sister’s tuition, and excessively spend on unimportant items.
He admitted that upon his arrival in the UK, he was forced to decide between leaving for Ghana or remaining to look for work to support his family in the absence of legal documentation.
“It got to a time where I didn’t know where my next meal was going to come from but I had a chance to get to the UK in October 2019. I was fortunate enough that my aunt was there. I had to make a decision whether to come back to Ghana and do the music or remain in the UK.”
When the aspiring rapper’s account got empty at the same time that his music career was on hold, his life quickly took a turn for the worse.
“I did not pay heed to my humble background and in no time I was broke again. The lowest point for me in my life was when I didn’t know where my next meal would come from and the deciding moment was to kickstart my music career,” he lamented.
He continued by saying that things were so bad that he had to rely on sports betting to provide for his daily needs. The famous person had to borrow money from friends on the days when the wager did not go in his favor.
However, his team’s choice to send him back to the studios to produce hit songs was successful and won him success. He said with a smile that his situation is a little bit better now than it was three years ago when he had nothing to his name.
