The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has issued a strong warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) over the approval of illegal building permits, cautioning that those responsible will be held accountable.
Speaking on the growing concerns surrounding unauthorised construction activities, the Minister expressed frustration over the continued disregard for planning regulations and warned that officials who facilitate illegal developments could face consequences.
“I just want one person as a scapegoat,” she reportedly stated, signalling her determination to ensure that someone is made to answer for breaches involving unlawful building approvals.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns about poor urban planning, unauthorised structures, and developments that contribute to flooding risks and other environmental challenges in the Greater Accra Region.
Linda Ocloo stressed the need for MMDCEs and local authorities to enforce building regulations strictly and ensure that permits are issued only in accordance with approved planning standards.
She noted that local government officials have a responsibility to protect communities by preventing developments that could endanger lives and undermine sustainable city planning.
The Minister’s comments have sparked discussions about accountability within local government structures, with many calling for stronger enforcement of laws governing construction and land use.
Authorities are expected to intensify monitoring efforts as government continues its push to address illegal developments and improve urban management across the region.
