A new chapter has begun in the history of Asanteman following the unveiling of Nana Ama Bonsu as the 15th Asantehemaa (Queen Mother), succeeding the late Nana Konadu Yiadom III. The historic ceremony at the Manhyia Palace has drawn nationwide attention, with many Ghanaians eager to learn more about the woman stepping into one of the kingdom’s most revered traditional offices.
A Royal Daughter of Asanteman
Nana Ama Bonsu is a respected businesswoman and a member of the Manhyia Royal Family. She comes from one of the most distinguished royal lineages in Asante history, being a direct granddaughter of Prempeh I, the Asantehene who was exiled to the Seychelles by the British alongside Yaa Asantewaa during the Anglo-Asante conflicts. She is also the niece of Prempeh II and the biological sister of the late Nana Akwasi Agyemang.
Why She Was Chosen
Within the royal family, Nana Ama Bonsu is widely regarded as a respected and unifying figure. She is admired for her humility, patience, calm disposition, and wisdom—qualities considered essential for the office of Asantehemaa, who serves as the highest-ranking woman in Asanteman and a key adviser to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
A Powerful Traditional Office
The Asantehemaa plays a pivotal role in preserving the customs and traditions of the Asante Kingdom. Beyond leading women across Asanteman, the Queen Mother is central to conflict resolution, family matters, and, most importantly, the nomination of a successor to the Golden Stool whenever the position of Asantehene becomes vacant.
A New Era Begins
The unveiling of Nana Ama Bonsu marks the end of the transition period following the passing of Nana Konadu Yiadom III in 2025. Her appointment ushers in a new era of traditional leadership, with expectations that she will help safeguard the cultural heritage and unity of Asanteman for generations to come.
